It’s Lambing Season

With Spring arriving the grass is turning green and our Ladies (Ewes) are looking healthy and heavy. Christiaan and I (Jamie-Lee) have been monitoring and waiting with baited breath in anticipation of this season’s lambs arriving. And, of course, the first ones made a grand appearance- along with a few surprises!

Over the past weekend we had been watching the Ladies just in case an early arrival occurred. By Sunday afternoon nothing had happened- but the excitement got to me and I convinced Christiaan to have ‘one more look’ late Sunday afternoon. Boy am I glad we did! There in the tall grass, away from the flock, two little bundles nestled against their Mama. Our first lambs had arrived- and twins at that!

After lying in the grass just watching them for a bit, Christiaan pulled me away to leave the Mama and her lambs in peace as she continued to clean and get acquainted with them.

Come Monday morning, I was very eager to know if any more lambs had arrived. Christiaan informed me that none had, but that we could have ‘one more look’ late afternoon as we had to move the flock to the barns in preparation for the impending storms.

Once the Ladies were moved, we noticed two more Ewes had lambed healthy single lambs -Yay! But the surprises kept coming….

Checking the area in preparation for the winds and hale expected, we went in search of a cow that we knew had to calf soon. As light clouds started rolling in we drove to the only place left to look, an old storage building. There she was- with the cutest little calf sleeping at her feet! And of course, the heavens opened up in that instant and poured down- leaving Christiaan, myself, wary Mama cow, and the curious little calf all bunched up together in the tiny little space….

What a start to Lambing Season!
