Frequently Asked Questions

BDA

What does “BDA” mean?

BDA is an abbreviation of Bois D’Arc. Bois d’Arc is the French word for the Native American description of the Osage Tree (“bow-wood”). Native Americans used the Osage Tree to fashion bows and arrows.

What is ‘Regenerative Agriculture’?

Regenerative Agriculture is farming and ranching in synchrony with nature and the four ecosystem processes to Repair, Rebuild, Revitalize and Restore ecosystem function starting with the life beneath the soil and expanding to life above the soil.

Pasture

Is BDA Organic?

BDA adheres to Grass Fed regulations. Our land is certified organic. However, we do not raise our animals under the Certified Organic label.  No chemicals or synthetics are used on our land.

What do the animals eat?

All our animals are raised on organic pasture and annual fields, so their diet consists of mainly grass and forb species, with additional supplementation. We supplement the feeder ruminants (cows) with Citrus pulp and Canola meal.

Do the animals get Antibiotics or Hormones?

We do not administer hormones or feed antibiotics to our animals, but we provide humane treatment to ill animals if needed. Animals treated humanely with antibiotics are separated from our Grass-fed/Pastured animals and transferred into the conventional market.

Does BDA vaccinate the livestock?

We believe that an ‘across-the-board’ system or protocol is not always the most beneficial and therefore strive to be observant of what nature is telling us and adapt accordingly. We do not use medication indiscriminately, but weigh our actions against the welfare of the animal. In our environment in the South East we are prone to certain diseases and vaccinate the animals against those specific pathogens with the animal’s health and care in mind.

How do I best prepare my steak?

1.     Bring your steak to room temperature before cooking (this helps the heat spread evenly during cooking)

2.     Sear the steak under high heat to lock in moisture, then lower the heat and cook to desired degree of tenderness.

3.     Rest the steak for 5-10 minutes before slicing and serving. This allows the juices to redistribute.

4.     Slice against the grain to enhance texture and tenderness.

How do I purchase a whole or half beef?

Please read our announcement for detailed instructions on reserving your whole/half beef share. If you have any questions, please reach out to Sally at swashburn@bdafarm.com.
